Our History

The New Waltham Garden Club was formed in 1985 as The New Waltham Horticultural Society.

The first members of the committee included Peter Kemp, Arthur Peterson, Brian Gould, Tony Swan, David Light, Olga Drysdale, Dorothy Salt, Barbara Clay, and Julie Light.

The first of the Annual Shows was held that year under the Management of Mr. Roy Goring and his wife Eve, who was Show Secretary. They maintained those tasks for a magnificent 25 years, during which time devised a system of administration that ensured the smooth running of the growing number of exhibits over the years. We are very grateful for the work put into those early years by them and so many in the village.

Our present Show Manager is Mr. Bill Parrott and Show Secretary is his wife Jean..(what is it about husband and wife teams..?) and the Show continues from strength to strength. Do look at the ‘Show’ section to see varied schedule and admire the photos.

A committee of the 1990’s voted to change the name to the present New Waltham Garden Club, considering it was not quite so intimidating as an ‘horticultural society’ to any potential members who were gardening beginners.

From a beginning of some thirty members, the club now has a membership of one hundred and thirty. This results in an average attendance at each monthly meeting of about eighty. When we have ‘celebrity speakers’ we move to the Waltham Toll Bar Conference Centre to accommodate the extra visitors.
